10th Grader Carina Wetekam Faces First Job Interview with Mentors' Guidance

Today, Carina Wetekam, a 10th grader at Gustav-Heinemann-Realschule, is having her first job interview. She's not alone, though. Two professional mentors, Bernhard Boss and Ernst Blömeke, are guiding her through the process as part of the 'Mentors for a Time' project. This initiative, active since 2008, supports young people in finding apprenticeships using the mentors' professional knowledge and life experience.

Currently, 21 young people are being accompanied by mentors in the project. Most are already in apprenticeships, receiving help with career orientation, job applications, internships, and job interview preparation. The mentors, often volunteers from the city, continue their support even after the apprenticeship begins. The project operates in seven schools, providing honest feedback and tips to participants.

The mentors observe the candidate's demeanor and understanding of the job profile during interviews. Brigitte Vogler, the coordinator, explains that these trainings help correct unrealistic expectations and alleviate fears about job interviews. The project also supports young people, often with migration or refugee backgrounds, in their transition from school to work.

The 'Professional Mentors' project is seeking more volunteers to continue and expand its meaningful support. With success stories and sustainability demonstrated in similar initiatives like Stiftung HELP e.V. and 'MENTOR – die Leselernhelfer', the project encourages more dedicated individuals to contribute their time and expertise to youth mentoring.
