Advancement of Education Geared Towards Sustainable Progress
Aschaffenburg Recognized as a BNE Model Municipality
The city of Aschaffenburg has concluded its participation in the BNE Model Municipality project, a nationwide network in Germany focused on promoting education for sustainable development (BNE). The cooperation between Aschaffenburg and BiNaKom, which began in 2021, has now come to an end after a successful four-year collaboration.
During this period, Aschaffenburg and local actors implemented various projects and measures for education for sustainable development. The city's commitment to this cause was recognized with a certificate as a "BNE Model Municipality" from BiNaKom, in recognition of the organizations' exemplary commitment to education for sustainable development and implementation of the global sustainability goals of Agenda 2030.
The BNE Model Municipality project in Aschaffenburg focused on promoting education for sustainable development and implementing various projects and measures. One such project was the Open Days Barcamp event, which took place in June 2024, bringing together actors from education, politics, and civil society in Aschaffenburg.
Aschaffenburg remains committed to further anchoring education for sustainable development in the city even after the project period. The city's Volkshochschule and Verein Migranten für Migranten e.V. were also honoured with the "National Award - Education for Sustainable Development" from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German UNESCO Commission.
Mayor Jürgen Herzing emphasized that the cooperation has given valuable insights on connecting sustainability and education more strongly.
