AI Revolutionizing Irish Weather Forecasting: UCD Appoints Met Éireann Professor

Prof Andrew Parnell, Director of AIMSIR research institute, is driving advancements in Irish weather forecasting. His appointment as Met Éireann Professor of Data Science for Climate and Weather at UCD signals growing investment in AI-based meteorology.

AIMSIR, a collaboration between Met Éireann and Insight Research Ireland, is training students in meteorology and AI. This aligns with global trends, as larger tech companies invest in AI for more precise long-term and sub-seasonal clima predictions. These advancements help industries like finance, insurance, and renewable energy manage risks and improve operational efficiency.

EUMetSat's satellite launches for better detection of weather extremes are further driving investment in weather data analysis. In Ireland, the HSE is collaborating with AIMSIR to research the human effects of extreme clima, such as strokes and mental health. AIMSIR researchers will work with ECMWF data and Met Éireann supervisors to ensure applicable research projects.

AI has significantly improved weather forecasting, leading to more accurate predictions. Ireland is at the forefront of this development, with major investments like the Research Ireland Co-Centre Climate Plus and Met Éireann's €5m investment in PhD training and High Performance Computing. These efforts aim to enhance weather forecasting capabilities and adapt to clima change.
