Austria Boosts Sustainable Construction with Timber and Geothermal Focus
Austria is stepping up its commitment to sustainable construction, with a focus on affordable housing and healthcare buildings. The country aims to reduce its carbon footprint and adapt to climate change. Vienna, the capital, is at the forefront of these efforts, planning innovative timber construction projects and geothermal energy use.
Over 1,860 buildings in Austria now carry the klimaaktiv quality mark, with a significant focus on large-volume residential construction. This number is set to grow, as the klimaaktiv standard expands in 2025 to include climate change adaptation and circular economy criteria. The Austrian timber construction initiative has already funded 194 large-volume projects with €28 million from 2021 to 2025, saving 70,000 tonnes of CO2.
Vienna, aiming for climate neutrality by 2040, is tackling its social housing sector's renovation tasks. The city plans lighthouse projects like Europe's first city quarter in timber construction and geothermal energy use, the 'LeopoldQuartier'. This sustainably designed neighborhood will use timber construction, geothermal energy, and photovoltaics for minimal CO2 footprint. Additionally, Vienna has started a groundwater revolution with 70 new community apartments using groundwater for heating and cooling.
The Austrian government is supporting these efforts. The economic stimulus package for housing 2024/2025 mobilizes over two billion euros for ecological renovations and affordable housing. In 2024 alone, 335 buildings received klimaaktiv certification, a 22% increase from the previous year.
Future timber construction funding in Austria will prioritize affordable housing and healthcare buildings, aligning with the country's goal to reduce its carbon footprint and adapt to climate change. Vienna's innovative projects, such as the LeopoldQuartier, are paving the way for sustainable urban development. With significant government support, Austria is committed to a greener future.
