Ava Chessum ('24) secures Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) fellow, a passionate art enthusiast with a keen interest in museum education and administration, is preparing for a transformative journey to Germany. The fellow, who has honed their skills at Oberlin College, found the CBYX program appealing due to its language-intensive phase at the beginning and its focus on professional development. They aim to learn from the differences in German arts and culture, make international connections, and gain a global and comparative perspective on the arts and cultural sector outside of America. The CBYX scholarship, which covers cultural exchange, language learning, and professional development in both the USA and Germany, will fund the fellow's 11-month sojourn starting in July 2025. The fellowship consists of three phases: language classes, study at a German university, and an internship. During the first phase, the fellow will attend language classes for two months to immerse themselves in the German language. Afterwards, they will attend a German university for a semester, with some classes taught in German. The final phase of the program will see the fellow choosing an internship that aligns with their interests and career goals. The fellow's experiences at Oberlin, particularly their art history honors thesis and work at the Allen Memorial Art Museum, have prepared them for a self-directed program like the fellowship. They hope to learn about the ways that other countries approach the arts and cultural heritage, and are particularly interested in different kinds of art collecting institutions in Germany. The fellow intends to apply the learnings from the fellowship to their post-college life and career, believing that the experience will help them identify a specific subfield in the arts and cultural sector. They have not mentioned any specific art collecting institutions in Germany they plan to focus on during the fellowship. The fellow gained confidence in their research and writing skills, academic independence, and ability to deliver on big goals from their experiences at Oberlin. They are eager to use these skills to make a meaningful impact in the international arts and cultural community. The fellowship aims to promote mutual exchange and allow fellows to learn about the ways their intended career field may function differently in Germany. The fellow is excited about the opportunity to broaden their horizons and looks forward to the enriching experiences that lie ahead.
