Bosbüll's Green District Heating Network Expands This Summer
Bosbüll's innovative district heating network, launched in 2020, is set for expansion. The project, hailed as a model for decentralised energy transition by Minister President Daniel Günther, will start construction in August 2025 and aims to supply heat to half the village by the 2025/26 heating season.
The network, powered by regional wind and solar electricity, uses Power-to-Heat technology and waste heat from hydrogen production. Two electrolyzers generate green hydrogen, fuelling fuel cell buses and vehicles via eFarm refuelling stations. A 40-kW heat pump and a heating rod convert excess electricity into heat, stored in a buffer tank for efficient use. The expansion, supported by the municipality and operated by Bosbüll Energie GmbH, involves shareholders Bürgerwindpark Bosbüll and GP Joule. Stadtwerke Niebüll and Energie und Wasser GmbH Nordfriesland are also involved, with completion expected by autumn 2025.
The expanded district heating network in Bosbüll, connecting half the village, is expected to deliver first heat during the 2025/26 season. The project demonstrates the potential of decentralised energy systems, combining renewable electricity, heat, and hydrogen production for a sustainable future.
