Boston-based academic institution Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) welcomes back financial regulation expert Gary Gensler in his role as professor, following his departures from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Gary Gensler, a distinguished figure in the world of finance and economics, has returned to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a Professor of the Practice of Global Economics and Management and Finance at the Sloan School of Management. His focus at MIT will be on teaching and conducting research in artificial intelligence, financial technologies, and public policy.
Gensler, who earned a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's in corporate administration from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, has had an illustrious career. He held key positions in the U.S. Treasury under Bill Clinton and served as the Chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) under Barack Obama before joining MIT in 2018.
In 2014, Gensler was awarded the Tamar Frankel Fiduciary Prize for his significant contributions to the field of fiduciary duties. His return to MIT has been met with excitement, particularly from Nobel Prize-winning economist Simon Johnson, who has announced that they will be teaching a brand-new course together.
Professor Andrew Lo will work alongside Gensler in his role at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). Gensler will resume his role as co-director of the FinTechAI@CSAIL initiative, a role he held prior to his departure from MIT.
While Gensler's courses at MIT will cover finance, financial technology, and public policy, there is no public indication that he plans to assign Bitcoin's white paper as homework.
Before joining MIT, Gensler spent 18 years at Goldman Sachs, rising to partner in mergers and acquisitions. His return to academia marks a new chapter in his career, one that promises to shape the future of finance, technology, and public policy.
