Boy, 13, Rescued Alive After 72 Hours Under Rubble in Indonesia Earthquake
A 13-year-old boy, Selendra Haikal Rakaditya, was rescued after being trapped for 72 hours under the rubble of the Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, East Java, following an earthquake. Haikal was taken to a local hospital, where he is being treated for injuries and trauma.
The earthquake struck during afternoon prayers, causing the school's second floor to collapse. Haikal was among five students who found themselves trapped in an air pocket, with a narrow escape route blocked by the body of a friend who perished in the collapse. Throughout their ordeal, Haikal and his friends stayed calm and prayed together. Rescue efforts took three days, with rescuers passing bread and water to the trapped students through a created shaft. Haikal's mother, Dewi Ajeng, is now focused on her son's physical and emotional wellbeing. Doctors are working to restore blood flow to his leg, which was trapped by a falling piece of the roof. Once Haikal recovers, Dewi plans to find him a new school to attend. The collapse left at least 100 students injured, five dead, and at least 60 initially unaccounted for, including Haikal and his friends.
Haikal's rescue brings hope amidst the tragedy. His calm demeanor and the support of his friends during their ordeal are commendable. As Haikal recovers, his mother will ensure he receives the care and education he deserves. The incident has raised questions about the school's construction and safety measures, which remain unanswered.
