Bremen Expands Schooling for Refugee Children, Opens New Learning Location
Bremen's educational system has expanded to accommodate refugee children. A new learning location has opened near Überseestadt primary school, with three rooms rented for the purpose. The facility is connected to the neighboring school, and parents will accompany their children on the new route.
The new learning offer began on March 11, welcoming primary-aged children from the initial reception facility at Birkenfelsstraße in Überseestadt. This initiative is part of Bremen's ongoing efforts to integrate refugee news into its school system. Since 2022, around 3,400 refugee children and young people have been taken in at Bremen schools in the partial integrative pre-course system and at welcome schools.
Currently, there are three welcome schools in Bremen, with plans to open another one in the Marßel district after Easter. The new learning offer is designed to help children familiarize themselves with the daily school routine before transitioning to a regular school. Due to high demand, more school places are planned to be created in another welcome school. A team of four teachers or learning companions and a coordinator is available to support the children in their educational journey.
The new learning location near Überseestadt primary school is part of Bremen's commitment to integrating refugee children into its school system. With a team of educators supporting the children and plans to expand the welcome school network, Bremen continues to provide opportunities for refugee children to thrive in their new environment.
