Campus dwellers in Montreal granted voting rights in local council elections
Elections Montreal is gearing up for the 2025 municipal elections, and they have some exciting new initiatives planned to encourage more citizens to exercise their democratic right to vote.
In an effort to increase voter turnout, particularly among the younger generation, Elections Montreal is implementing several pilot projects. One such project is adding photos of candidates to all elective positions' ballots. This initiative will be rolled out in about fifty municipalities across the city.
Another pilot project involves publishing candidate profiles on Elections Montreal's website. This move is aimed at providing voters with more information about the candidates, helping them make informed decisions on election day.
To further promote voting, Elections Montreal will launch an advertising campaign named "Vote democracy. I vote for Montreal" in October. This campaign will highlight Montrealers' direct impact on their city and democracy, and is expected to motivate many to participate in the electoral process.
In addition, Elections Montreal will be hosting advance voting on Sunday, October 26, at more than 200 voting locations. On the eve of advance voting, more than 70 seniors' residences will host voting booths for their residents, and Elections Montreal teams will also visit people who have requested home voting for health reasons.
To cater to the younger demographic, informative videos will be broadcast to promote voting among young people and first-time voters. Moreover, Elections Montreal will be setting up voting booths on university and college campuses on October 24, 27, 28, and 29.
A citizen mobilization team will be deployed on the ground to promote voting, and a citizen table on Montreal elections will be held. All voting locations will be universally accessible, ensuring that everyone can participate in the democratic process.
The Elections Montreal website provides an overview of important dates and information for the voter in the municipal elections. However, no information about a small guide for the voter in the municipal elections or a bid for SAAQclic was provided in the current paragraph.
It's worth noting that regular voting day is November 2nd, and there are more than 450 voting locations on election day, inferred from the advance voting mentioning more than 200 locations.
Lastly, the Quebec Student Union (Union étudiante du Québec, UEQ) will be conducting votes at 16 post-secondary institutions in Montreal on October 24, 27, 28, and 29, and will also be publishing candidate profiles on their website as part of two additional pilot projects for 2025.
With these new measures in place, Montrealers are invited to take an active role in shaping their city's future by voting in the upcoming municipal elections.
