Carlton University journalism student Aria Wilson shares her family's struggle with mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her family member's physical health issues, exacerbated by isolation and delayed surgery, led to a decline in mental health. Despite the challenges, the family found support through a day program and community initiatives.

Aria's family member has been battling a slipped disc for years, with no resolution in sight. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated matters, leading to increased feelings of isolation and a decline in communication among loved ones. Global anxiety and depression levels surged by 25% in the first pandemic year, according to the World Health Organization.

The family member's mental health deteriorated due to the lack of resolution for their physical health issues and the strain of waiting for surgery. They were admitted to the Inpatient Mental Health Unit multiple times, but follow-up care was minimal. Aria's family found some relief through a day program, which helped manage their loved one's mental health.

In response to the mental health crisis, the Gates Foundation donated five million dollars in 2021 to support a psychiatric facility in Burlington, Ontario. The donation aimed to raise a total of twenty million dollars to fund collaborative mental health initiatives.
