Centuries-old student journalism at Holy Cross commemorated by The Spire and HerCampus in their 100th year
Former Student Journalists of Holy Cross College Continue to Make an Impact
In a recent collaboration, HerCampus and Eco-Action hosted the Thrift Shop event at Holy Cross College. The event, held on March 22, was also a joint effort with The Spire, the flagship campus newspaper of Holy Cross since 1925.
Grace Bromage '23, Cassie Smith '23, and Brandon Gomez '14 were guest speakers at the event. Bromage, a member of The Spire's executive board, spoke about the community she found within the board and the importance of writing. Smith, who restarted the Holy Cross HerCampus chapter after COVID, emphasised how HerCampus was a place for her to write about various interests outside of traditional news. Gomez, who now works for CNBC, encouraged students to talk to him about journalism.
Students had the opportunity to donate clothing on October 23 and October 24, and the biannual HerCampus Thrift Store was held on October 28, 2024, at Holy Cross in Hogan B/C.
The SGA is requiring all RSO members to submit essays for re-recognition, a process that has been gruelling for student organization leaders. They have to organize constitutions, mission statements, blood pacts, and myHC subscriptions as part of the re-recognition process.
Despite the challenges, former student journalists from these groups have leveraged their college experiences to effect change and contribute positively in professional realms. Alumni such as Antonio Willis-Berry ’13 are noted for active involvement in college initiatives addressing student needs, showing leadership beyond their college years. Current student journalists at The Spire, like Kate Santini ’27 and Molly Landis ’27, indicate an ongoing tradition of strong journalistic engagement that likely continues to prepare students for impactful careers.
HerCampus, typically a platform that nurtures skills in digital journalism, media, and communications, suggests that alumni are often well-equipped for careers in media, marketing, communications, or related fields.
As The Spire enters its centennial publication year in 2025, members of both The Spire and HerCampus Executive Boards were happy with how the event went. Ben Lepper '25, Editor in Chief of The Spire, was excited to bring two organizations together to celebrate. The front of every issue of The Spire states that it is the flagship campus newspaper of Holy Cross since 1925, a testament to its rich history and enduring influence.
