Clinic's Hospital Presents Teddy: Overcoming Children's Anxiety Towards Medical Professionals

In the heart of Darmstadt, Germany, the Bundestag information bus was a temporary attraction, but the real excitement was happening at the Merck Stadium at the Böllenfalltor. For three days, the Klinikum Darmstadt transformed into a unique venue known as the "Teddy Hospital."

This year marked the fourth time the "Teddy Hospital" event has been held in Darmstadt, with an increasing number of participants each year. Approximately 600 children aged four to six, along with 20 medical students in their practical year at the clinic, gathered to take part in this special event.

The purpose of the "Teddy Hospital" is to help take away children's fear of hospitals. During the event, the children put on a green surgical cap, blue gown, and mouthguard for the operation, while their teddy bears and stuffed animals underwent mock surgeries.

A giant teddy bear, located outside the entrance of the Klinikum Darmstadt on a blue hospital bed, was the star of the show. With a white bandage wrapped around its ear and arm, the teddy bear underwent surgery in front of the children, who watched with wide-eyed wonder.

Small cotton balls were removed from the teddy bear during the surgery, and each child was given the opportunity to stick a plaster on the teddy bear after the operation. The children were also asked if they wanted to give the teddy bear an anesthesia injection.

The medical students examined the children's stuffed animals individually at small tables, using real medical equipment. Medical student Katharina Küllmer reported that the practical experience at the event was helping her to become more confident in handling children.

One medical student, Johanna Wiegand, conducted an examination on a child's cat stuffed animal, who had a "broken head" according to the child. The sign on the glass door of the location read "Teddy Hospital," clearly indicating the purpose of the event.

The "Teddy Hospital" event at Klinikum Darmstadt is a unique opportunity for children to become familiar with medical environments. While specific details about the frequency and participation at the event are not available, it is clear that the event is a hit with both the children and the medical students.

In this unique setting, the "Teddy Hospital" at Klinikum Darmstadt offers a blend of science, education, and personal-growth opportunities, particularly in the health-and-wellness and education-and-self-development sectors. Medical students, such as Katharina Küllmer and Johanna Wiegand, gain practical experience in working with children and overcoming their own fears, while the children develop a more positive association with hospitals and the medical field.
