Coca-Cola Introduces Cane Sugar Alternative to Classic Recipe in US

Coca-Cola is introducing a new product in the US this fall, offering consumers a choice beyond their classic recipe. The new option aims to cater to those who prefer to avoid high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a common sweetener in many news articles about soft drinks.

A 12-ounce can of regular Coke contains 39 grams of sugar, nearly 10 teaspoons, all of which is HFCS. Despite health concerns surrounding HFCS, such as its potential to promote liver fat buildup and insulin resistance due to its slightly higher fructose content, a 2022 study found that it has similar effects on weight, blood pressure, and body mass index compared to cane sugar.

The new Coke product will be made with cane sugar, which has a light golden color, larger crystals, and a stronger molasses flavor. Both cane sugar and HFCS have been linked to health issues like heart disease and diabetes when consumed in excess. Federal guidelines recommend keeping added sugars to under 10% of daily calories, which is about 12 teaspoons or 50 grams per day for a 2,000-calorie diet.

Coca-Cola's new product offers American consumers a choice between the classic HFCS-sweetened Coke and the new cane sugar option. Both sweeteners have their pros and cons, and consumers are encouraged to make informed decisions based on their personal health preferences and dietary needs.
