Conflict at K20/21 Düsseldorf: Chagall and the contemporary queer art movement explored
K20 Art Museum Announces Upcoming Changes and Exhibitions
The K20 Art Museum, a cultural cornerstone of Düsseldorf, has announced several significant changes and upcoming exhibitions.
Gregor Jansen Steps Down
In a surprising turn of events, Gregor Jansen, the director of K20, has announced his departure due to health reasons, effective at the end of the year. His tenure will be remembered for the numerous thought-provoking exhibitions and initiatives he spearheaded.
Current and Upcoming Exhibitions
Currently, Katharina Sieverding's exhibition is on display in K21 until March. From March 15th to August 10th, the museum will showcase the works of the beloved painter, Marc Chagall, who hails from the white Russian village of Vitebsk. After Sheila Hicks' exhibition, an exhibition by the Düsseldorf Artists' Association (VdDK) is announced, running from March 15 to May 25.
In a unique collaboration, Yoko Ono is presenting a solo exhibition at the Kunstsammlung des 20. Jahrhunderts (K20) until mid-March. This exhibition is in cooperation with the Wiener Albertina. Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger, a painter, psychoanalyst, philosopher, and peace activist, will have an exhibition in K21 from February 22nd to August 31st.
Focus on 'Queer Modernism'
From September 20th, 2023, the K20 will focus on 'Queer Modernism'. The museum aims to honour artists of a forgotten avant-garde who centred the influence and perspective of gender and sexuality in their artistic work.
Renovation and Future-Proofing
The K20, built in 1967, requires renovation and will close for two years starting from 2026. During this period, the museum will operate as a 'nomadic art hall' with various small exhibitions across the city's districts. The K20 is also committed to future-proofing and aims to reopen in 2026, following renovations.
Leadership Changes
As of now, there is a lack of guiding vision at K20, as the new director for the period following renovation has not been explicitly mentioned. However, other institutions such as the Kunstverein München with Tom Engels and Gloria Hasnay taking director roles in late 2025 and early 2026, have been making headlines.
Susanne Gaensheimer, the director of Kunstsammlung NRW, is applauded by experts and ranked at number 18 on Monopol's list of the 100 most important personalities in the art world. Her leadership and vision have been instrumental in shaping the artistic landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Accessibility
It is worth noting that the K20 art museum is not wheelchair accessible. Visitors are advised to check the accessibility of specific exhibitions before planning their visit.
With these changes and exhibitions on the horizon, the K20 continues to be a vibrant and essential part of Düsseldorf's cultural landscape. Stay tuned for more announcements regarding exhibitions after May 25th.
