Counting Penguins Through a Educational, Cost-Free Math Game with Printable Resources
Play and Learn with a Fun, Interactive Penguin Counting Game!
Having fun while learning is the best approach, especially when it comes to numbers and math, and this penguin-themed game has my little ones hooked! Here's how you can create your own version at home.
Do-It-Yourself Felt Board- All you'll need is a piece of blue felt and a foam board. Attach the felt to the board tightly, then it's ready to go!
Game Pieces- Draw and cut out large and small icebergs on stiff white felt using a permanent marker. Use fabric paint to write numbers from 1 to 18 (or more, depending on your paint supply) on smaller pieces of felt and cut them out.
Printable Penguins- Download the free penguin printable and cut out the penguins. Attach them to black felt for a fun touch.
Now that everything's set up, there are so many opportunities for learning! Kids can practice counting, one to one correspondence, patterns, ordinal numbers, addition, subtraction, and even sorting and creating patterns with the penguins. And they can let their imaginations run wild playing pretend in their very own penguin scene!
Initiate counting games by having children choose numbers they know and adding that many penguins to the icebergs. As they progress, challenge them to act like the numbers are icebergs floating by, trying to "get" that number of penguins.
For example, if they roll a six, they can find six penguins and place them on a designated iceberg. Or, they can try to find six penguins with different colored eyes and sort them by color.
Looking for more ideas? Consider combining music and movement by singing songs like "5 Little Penguins" while acting out the counting. You can even turn it into a competition or a team effort to inspire some healthy competition and problem-solving among the children.
