Customs in Landshut Seize €17M in Fake Clothes, Stop Illegal Waste Exports

Customs officers in Landshut, Germany, have made significant seizures of counterfeit goods and prevented illegal waste exports. The majority of the fake items originated from Turkey and were cleverly concealed among legitimate shipments.

The Suben customs office intercepted a massive haul of counterfeit clothing, valued at over 17 million euros. The fake goods included high-end brand items such as jackets, pullovers, T-shirts, jeans, scarves, socks, and hats from over 140 different brand owners.

In addition to clothing, over 9,000 fake packages and labels for shisha tobacco were seized. This prevented a substantial tax loss, as these items would have been sold without proper taxation.

Customs officers also discovered and prohibited the export of plastic waste to Turkey, violating waste transport laws. This action helps to protect the environment from illegal dumping.

Astrid Früchtl, head of the Suben customs office, warned about the high risks posed by counterfeit technical articles. Elvira Enders-Beetschen, press spokesperson at the Main Customs Office Landshut, echoed this concern, stating that many companies face the problem of their high-quality products being copied and sold at lower costs and quality.

The export of dual-use goods, such as a laser cutting machine destined for Iran, requires a permit and can be prohibited by customs to prevent misuse.

The successful seizures by customs officers highlight the importance of their work in protecting consumers, businesses, and the environment from the harmful effects of counterfeiting and illegal waste exports. The upcoming Zollinfotage career events in Altdorf and Passau, on April 26 and May 10, 2025, respectively, will provide an opportunity for interested individuals to learn more about careers in customs enforcement.
