Fresh Take on DAAD

The DAAD Shake-Up

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) recently shuffled its deck with new student members stepping into key roles following the organization's annual general meeting. Bonn was abuzz as these student leaders took the helm, while a by-election brought fresh blood to the Board from the circle of member universities.

New Student Leaders

New student members elected to the Board and Advisory Council breathed life into the DAAD headquarters today. Four active student leaders hailing from various universities emerged victorious in Frank Bonn's annual election.

  • Kumar Ashish from Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg
  • Aiym Jandybayeva of Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn
  • Julian Windeck representing Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg
  • Diana Zhunussova, a student from Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg

These newly-elected student representatives will embark on a two-year journey starting 1st January 2026.

The DAAD Advisory Council also welcomed three new student members from the circle of student governments. Sitting on the council are:

  • Amro Bay, Technische Universität Braunschweig
  • Daniel Janke, JMU Würzburg
  • Maren Weissig, Technische Universität Dresden

Their term begins on the same day and will last a staggering two years. As part of the Advisory Council, these students play a pivotal role in proposing candidates for the presidency, vice-presidency, and Board positions.

By-Election Winner

A by-election for a DAAD Board member from the circle of member universities resulted in Professor Dr. Sylvia Heuchemer, President of TH Köln, taking the coveted seat. Professor Heuchemer's term started immediately, running until the 31st of December 2027. She steps in to fill the shoes left vacant by Prof. Dr. Angela Ittel, who moved on to serve as Vice-President of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK).

The Annual General Meeting

Comprising representatives of 252 member universities and 104 student governments, the DAAD Annual General Meeting takes place annually in Bonn. For more information, connect with head of press office and spokesperson Michael Flacke at +49 228 882-454 or [email protected].

Insight:Based on general knowledge, the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) sometimes appoints student representatives to its board or advisory bodies so as to incorporate the student's perspective. However, details about the newly elected student members and the start date of their terms are generally announced directly by the DAAD on their official website or in press releases. Therefore, it's advised to check the official DAAD website or their latest official announcements for the most up-to-date information on the current members of the DAAD Board and Advisory Council and their term start dates.

  • The newly elected student representatives, including Kumar Ashish, Aiym Jandybayeva, Julian Windeck, and Diana Zhunussova, will embark on a journey of education-and-self-development as they serve on the DAAD Board, starting from 1st January 2026.
  • Additionally, the online-education landscape may witness further expansion with the inclusion of Amro Bay, Daniel Janke, and Maren Weissig on the DAAD Advisory Council, who will propose candidates for key positions within the organization for the next two years.
