Degree program in jewelry crafting offered at the University of Pforzheim
The Faculty of Design at the University of Pforzheim is expanding its course offerings with the introduction of a new program: the Master of Arts in Jewellery. The program, scheduled to begin accepting students in the winter semester of 2025, will be located on Holzgartenstraße.
Professor Christine Lüdeke will lead this innovative course, which aims to explore various interpretations of 'jewellery' and foster a mutually enriching dialogue with the industry. The program is designed to be international, with teaching in English and German, providing a diverse learning environment.
The new program will be a three-semester course, offering students a comprehensive understanding of jewellery design and making. It focuses on the tension between traditional knowledge and craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology, and forward-looking research and development. Experimentation and critical reflection will be a key aspect of the program, encouraging students to push the boundaries of contemporary jewellery practices.
The university's well-equipped workshops, brand-new digital labs, research institute for strategic technology and precious metals (STI), and the Jewellery Museum Pforzheim offer an excellent and unique playing field for students to hone their skills and explore new possibilities in jewellery design.
The future graduates of the program are expected to contribute to a meaningful development of jewellery and its possibilities in entirely new contexts, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. The program also aims to create interdisciplinary synergies, as part of a "Master Cluster" being developed with the fourth master's program of the Faculty of Design.
The application deadline for the new program is April 30, 2024. Students will be accepted once a year for the master's program, providing a selective and focused learning environment. The unique DNA of Pforzheim location offers a free approach to traditional techniques, encouraging students to reimagine and reinvent jewellery design in a manner that respects its rich history while embracing the future.
