Encouraging young individuals to harness their creativity for worldwide advancements in innovation, as suggested by CIBN
In a bid to commemorate the 2025 International Youth Day, a significant event took place in Nigeria, emphasising the power of youth and their potential to reposition the country for sustainable development. The theme of the programme was 'Think, Innovate, Transform: The Power of Youth in Repositioning Nigeria for Sustainable Development'.
Mrs. Christiana Salmwang, Lagos State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), urged the youth to think beyond their limits and avoid making excuses. She stated that this is not the time for flimsy lamentations, but a call to action.
Dr. Folasade Femi-Lawal, Country Manager and Area Business Head, West Africa, Mastercard, encouraged the youth to build a career as a leader in Nigeria's banking and financial services sector with integrity and accountability. She also emphasised the importance of collaboration across industries and being a change-maker, birthing success through smart decisions.
Mrs. Chinwe Iloghalu, Acting Managing Director of Nova Bank, commended the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) for its initiative to empower youths. She encouraged the youth to remain open to new opportunities and to challenge the status quo. She also urged them to develop innovative solutions capable of transforming their environment.
Mr. Ade Buraimo, Group Managing Director of Alpha Morgan Bank, urged the youth to think big, think far, and to aspire beyond limitations. He advised them to create time to learn, place themselves under mentorship, and to equip themselves to turn challenging situations into opportunities.
Nigeria's youthful population, with a median age of 18 years, represents one of the youngest in the world and is a powerful resource that can be harnessed to drive innovation and economic growth. Prof. Pius Olanrewaju, President and Chairman of Council of CIBN, highlighted the need for strategic investments in education, capacity building, job creation, and innovation to unlock the full potential of young Nigerians.
Prof. Olanrewaju's vision is for Nigeria to channel the creativity, skills, and energy of its young people into productive enterprise, innovation, and value creation for the world. He made this call at the third edition of the CIBN's Generation Next Forum in Lagos, where he was announced as the President and Chairman of Council of CIBN, hosting the event aimed at inspiring young Nigerians toward innovation and transformation of the country.
Dr. Femi-Lawal urged the youth to think boldly and innovate with purpose, noting that there are numerous challenges in need of solutions. The CIBN, in its support, called on Nigerian youths to leverage their creativity, skills, and determination to transform Nigeria into a global innovation hub.
In conclusion, the event served as a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within Nigeria's youth and the urgent need to empower, inspire, and equip them to transform the nation for sustainable development. The call to action is clear: think, innovate, and transform.
