Mastering Crisis and Resilience: Saarland's New Course at Bruchwiese School

Emergency Preparedness and Survivability: Introduced as a Novel Course at Saarbrucker Institute - Enhancing Community Defense and Durability - a Novel Focus at Saarbrücker School

Wanna know the knack on using a fire extinguisher or handle a major calamity? Soon, kids at the Bruchwiese Comprehensive School in Saarbrücken, Saarland will learn the answers to all that and more. This year, they're diving into a fresh subject that centers around more self-reliance, practical skills, and future preparedness.

It's all about health and civil protection

Come late summer, Bruchwiese School will unveil a new subject, "#Education for Sustainable Development" (ESD), aligning it with daily life. This innovative subject aims to impart knowledge and practical skills on health, civil protection, and societal participation, arming young minds with essential know-how.

The new course is part of a wider revamp in overall comprehensive school regulations in Saarland. It ensures that key UN sustainability goals are embedded in educational routines, with Bruchwiese focusing on two crucial goals: "Health and Well-being" and "Assuming Responsibility for Others."

School puts a spotlight on civil protection

Principal Pia Götten claims, "Our school has a longstanding health service pedigree, and the demand for first aid, fire safety education, or disaster response collaborations remains solid. With the new subject, we've created a well-coordinated framework for these topics." Due to political impetus—ex-Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) asserted in April that civil protection needs a stronger presence in schooling—the school is responding to the call.

What's the drill in emergencies?

The course includes four lessons a week, intertwining theory and practice sessions. It builds on existing curriculum structures, like social sciences, shallowly scratching topics such as "Crises and Conflicts," expanding on disaster psychology, and working through fear.

For instance, they'll grasp that, during crises, it isn't just physical dangers that spread, but also psychological ones, like panic. By mastering practical techniques for crisis situations, students "discover" their competency and ability to act. This builds resilience within their families, too.

Exam time at the fire extinguisher

Collaborative partners for the course include the Saarbrücken Volunteer Fire Department, THW, Johanniter, and the German Red Cross. This collaboration unveils exciting learning destinations into the aid sector sphere, as teacher Stefanie Lade suggests. Knowledge students learn will be measured both through written exams and practical applications—like in successfully operating a fire extinguisher.

  • Risk and Resilience: Teaching students about possible risks during natural disasters and how communities can foster resilience through sustainable practices.
  • Community Engagement: Encouraging students to collaborate locally on civil protection initiatives and disaster preparedness activities.
  • Sustainable Infrastructure: Discussing how sustainable infrastructure development contributes to disaster resilience.

Fire Safety Education and Sustainability

  • Prevention and Response: Imparting knowledge on fire prevention strategies and emergency response procedures.
  • Sustainable Materials and Practices: Discussing sustainable materials and practices that can minimize fire risks.
  • Community Awareness: Organizing fire safety drills and awareness campaigns, underlining the significance of collaborative fire prevention and response.

In summary, integrating these elements will empower students with a holistic understanding of sustainability that encapsulates both environmental and social dimensions, preparing them to give back positively to their communities and the world's sustainable development journey.
