Event Discussion on Crafting Ideal Design Portfolios for Admission Tests
Ms. Prachi Mittal, course leader for the Foundation Year programme at Kingston University, London, recently hosted an interactive webinar to guide students on effectively communicating their work and improving presentation skills in competitive academic or professional environments. The webinar, which took place on 27th April 2017, was attended by Mr. Manish Mangla and Ms. Bhavvna Jolly from the Admissions and Outreach Department.
Ms. Mittal, who is currently completing her Post Graduate qualification from Kingston University, shared her extensive industry and academic experience of above 18 years, spanning across product design, lifestyle accessories, graphics, and retail management. She has worked with some of the most renowned brands in India and has led curriculum development at various design institutes across the country.
The webinar covered various components of a portfolio, such as format specifications and the type of work to be included. It also discussed do's and don'ts for presenting a portfolio to a panel of judges. Aspirants creating portfolios for admission to design colleges, including those on free portfolio sites, were advised to focus on clarity, creativity, coherence, and relevance to the design brief or field.
The portfolio showcases the aspirant's interest in fields like Fashion Design, Communication Design, and Interior Architecture and Design. A frequently asked question was about creating a perfect portfolio for design entrance exams. The panellists emphasised the importance of demonstrating both technical skills and conceptual thinking in the portfolio.
The webinar aimed to provide valuable insights to design aspirants, helping them to present their work effectively and compete in the competitive academic or professional environments. It is an invaluable resource for students preparing for design college admissions, both in India and abroad.
