Former Employee Accused of Stealing $75K in Artifacts from New Bedford Whaling Museum

A former employee at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts has been accused of stealing a significant number of artifacts, with a total value exceeding $75,000. The theft, which occurred in 2023, has left the museum and the local community shocked.

Among the stolen items was a priceless bracelet belonging to Pharaoh Usermaatre Amenemope, who ruled ancient Egypt between 993 and 984 B.C. This artifact, along with others, was reportedly sold by the suspect, identified as Harry B., in various pawnshops and antique shops across the state. The museum is now working with local law enforcement to recover the stolen items and bring the suspect to justice.

In a separate incident, a former employee of the British Museum was found to have stolen over 1,800 artifacts in 2023. These included valuable gold jewelry and precious gems. Meanwhile, in Denmark, the Golden Horns of Gallehus, iconic artifacts from the Viking Age, were stolen and melted down in 1802. Similarly, a pharaoh's bracelet was stolen from a museum in Cairo and also melted down for its precious metals.

These incidents highlight the ongoing threat to cultural heritage and the importance of museum security. The New Bedford Whaling Museum is urging anyone with information about the recent theft to come forward. Meanwhile, the international art community remains vigilant against such crimes, which not only result in significant financial losses but also rob future generations of their cultural heritage.
