Freihof Schools Pioneer New School Zone Concept in Kirchheim unter Teck

The Freihof Schools in Kirchheim unter Teck are pioneering a new school zone concept, backed by the state program MOVERS - Active to School. This initiative aims to ease traffic congestion around schools and promote safe, independent mobility for children.

The MOVERS advisory service is supporting municipalities like Kirchheim unter Teck in setting up school streets and school zones. In August, the Ministry of Transport streamlined the legal process for implementing these zones. Kirchheim unter Teck has become one of the first municipalities to put this into practice, demonstrating a blocked street school zone.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister President and Minister of Interior Thomas Strobl, Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann, and Mayor Pascal Bader. The new ordinance, 'Guidelines for the traffic and street law implementation of school streets and school zones', simplifies municipal planning and execution. The project seeks to provide a relaxed arrival and quieter start to the school day for students.

While the city of Kehl was the first to establish a permanent closed pedestrian zone in the city center between 1990 and 1994, including closing the market square to car traffic by 1994, there is no specific state law found for the establishment of school zones. Despite this, Kirchheim unter Teck's initiative sets a positive example for other municipalities to follow, with the support of the MOVERS program.
