Gaza City Crisis: 250,000 Displaced as Israeli Operations Intensify

The situation in Gaza City has escalated dramatically, with over 250,000 people displaced in the past month. The UN estimates the average cost of displacement to the south at over $3,000 per family, making it unaffordable for many. Residents are fleeing as Israeli military operations intensify, including the bombing of high-rise residential buildings.

The crisis began with troops advancing into densely populated neighborhoods, forcing people to leave their homes. Mrs. Um Shadi al-Ashkar reported scenes of destruction and chaos, with death, shelling, and bombing. An elderly couple, Abu Nader Siam and his wife Zakia, walked for six hours due to lack of transportation after their neighborhood was bombed. The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Netanyahu, has announced plans to fully occupy the Gaza Strip, intensifying military operations.

Thousands of Palestinian families are fleeing the northern Gaza Strip, with residents lining up along the densely populated al-Rashid Road to escape. The Gaza Valley Bridge in the central Gaza Strip has been overcrowded due to the influx of displaced people. Ayman al-Khatib lost over 25 family members in the Tal al-Za'atar neighborhood and fled with surviving relatives due to bombardment. UNRWA reports that fuel is scarce and no shelter supplies have entered Gaza for seven months due to the Israeli blockade.

The situation in Gaza City remains dire, with no end in sight to the displacement and destruction. The UN estimates the average cost of displacement at $3,180 per family, making it unaffordable for many. As Israeli military operations continue, thousands more may be forced to flee their homes, exacerbating an already desperate humanitarian crisis.
