This is what the 'Autogipfel' at the Chancellor is all about - Germany's 'Autogipfel' Aims to Boost Auto Industry, Secure Jobs Amid Climate Transition
The German government is hosting the 'Autogipfel' to address challenges faced by the automotive industry. The meeting aims to boost the sector, secure jobs, and meet climate targets. Key topics include extending tax exemptions for electric vehicles and supporting low- and middle-income households in adopting climate-friendly mobility.
The coalition is proposing to extend the exemption from motor vehicle tax for electric cars until 2035, supporting the purchase of new electric vehicles. Additionally, discussions are underway for a program to assist low- and middle-income households in transitioning to climate-friendly mobility, using funds from the EU Climate Social Fund.
The industry, with 770,000 jobs and 540 billion euros in annual turnover, is facing challenges. Sales are declining, competition from China is growing, and the shift to electric mobility is proving difficult. The market share of purely battery-powered passenger cars in Germany is around 18 percent in the first nine months of the year.
The meeting, attended by top representatives from car manufacturers, suppliers, associations, unions, and federal states with larger production sites, also focuses on the 2022 decision to end the registration of new internal combustion engine vehicles on the EU market by 2035. The large 'automotive states' of Lower Saxony and Bavaria have jointly proposed a relaxation of the ban on internal combustion engines.
The 'Autogipfel' is set to discuss potential flexibility regarding plug-in hybrids after 2035, though no direct new subsidies currently exist. The federal government aims to find a balance between supporting the struggling automotive industry and meeting ambitious climate targets. The outcome of these discussions will significantly impact the future of the German automotive industry and its transition to sustainable mobility.
