Global Climate Action Gains Momentum Ahead of COP26

The global fight against climate change is gaining momentum, with nations and corporations setting ambitious targets and initiatives. China aims for net-zero by 2060, while the US plans a 50-52% reduction in emissions by 2030. Meanwhile, over 10,000 companies worldwide have adopted CDP standards, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and sustainability.

The Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) is set to reset corporate targets to '1.5°C' from 'well below 2°C' from 15 July 2022, reflecting the urgency of the climate crisis. This shift aligns with the European Green Deal 'Fit for 55' which aims to reduce EU's emissions by 55% by 2030. India, with the lowest per capita emissions among G20 countries, has urged others to reduce their emissions.

The upcoming COP 26 summit is poised to be a significant global event, with the potential to initiate action led by collaboration, accountability, attitude, and urgency. This follows India's commitment to achieve 450 GW of green energy by 2030 through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The global sustainable investment market has also shown growth, reaching USD 35 trillion in 2020, a 15% increase from 2018, with ESG integration being the most common sustainable investment strategy.

As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, it is clear that collective action and ambitious targets are crucial. With China, the US, and the EU leading the way, and India playing a significant role, the path towards carbon neutrality is becoming clearer. The upcoming COP 26 summit presents an opportunity for global collaboration and accountability, which is vital for planetary sustainability.
