Global Sumud Flotilla En Route to Gaza as Israel Intercepts Approach
The Global Sumud Flotilla, a massive humanitarian mission comprising representatives from over 44 countries, is currently navigating towards Gaza. The flotilla, which includes civil society members, doctors, jurists, and activists, carries substantial aid and is expected to reach its destination by Thursday morning. However, its journey is being closely monitored by Israeli forces, who have deployed over 20 boats in an attempt to intercept the convoy.
The flotilla's name, 'Sumud', symbolises steadfastness and unwavering determination in Arabic, reflecting the Palestinians' commitment to nonviolent resistance against occupation. It is the largest collective sailing towards Gaza to date, carrying vital medical supplies and other humanitarian aid.
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has evacuated 11 people, including 3 Turkish citizens, from civilian vessels participating in the operation in the Eastern Mediterranean. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has advanced more than 20 boats towards the flotilla in a naval blockade attempt.
The signal from the Estrella ship of the flotilla went dark following the announcement of Israeli boats' advance. The flotilla is approximately 90 nautical miles from Gaza and continues sailing through a high-risk zone in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Global Sumud Flotilla's journey has drawn international attention, with the United Nations and various human rights organisations expressing concern over the potential interception by Israeli forces. As the flotilla nears Gaza, the situation remains tense, with the safety of those on board a primary concern. Meanwhile, in unrelated news, a 5.0 earthquake was felt in Istanbul following a quake in Tekirdag, and former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad was reportedly poisoned in Moscow. In Turkey, talent management mogul Ayse Barim was released from prison in the Gezi Park trial.
