Guidance for Hiring a Tutor in Ukraine
Durham University student Alexandra Hart is spearheading a remarkable volunteer project, named Tutor for Ukraine, providing free online English language lessons to children aged 7 to 17 who have been affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The project, launched in May, has already seen over 200 students and 25 tutors participating. Alexandra, a third-year English and History student, has also published her first novel, a children's fantasy fiction book, demonstrating her passion for education and literature.
Tutor for Ukraine offers a structured learning environment, with lesson plans tailored for both older and younger students at beginner and intermediate levels of English. The initiative is supported by Durham University Student Volunteering & Outreach (DUSVO), which provides a DBS check, safeguarding training, and volunteering induction for new tutors.

Alexandra's determination to help Ukrainian children was sparked by her previous experience running a summer camp for children in Ukraine. The war in Ukraine prompted her to offer free English tuition to those living in the UK, providing a lifeline for children to continue their education amidst the disruptions caused by the conflict.
The project has a dedicated SharePoint site to promote Tutor for Ukraine and manage volunteers. Alexandra has also received help from DUSVO to set up the project. As the project continues to grow, Alexandra may retain leadership if it remains a Durham University project, or continue working on it if it expands to other universities.
Alexandra is currently in discussions about possible collaborations to expand Tutor for Ukraine, aiming to provide free English lessons to anyone struggling as a result of a crisis.
