Checked other job opening possibilities yet? - "Has any other establishment received an application from you?"
Job interviews often throw us off balance, and questions like "Have you applied elsewhere?" can leave applicants feeling uncomfortable and unsure of the best approach. However, the situation doesn't have to set off alarm bells. Embrace the question as an opportunity to showcase your professionalism and composure. Honesty could even be the key to landing the job.
Practical Reasons Behind the Question
According to career coach Volker Klärchen, the question about other applications can initially seem intrusive because applicants feel a certain commitment to the company. "Applicants want to convey to the company that they are the right person for this position, possibly even the only right one," he explains to Capital. When the company asks about other applications, it can feel like being caught red-handed. But don't be fooled by its seemingly harsh tone.
Personal consultant and career coach Ines Schöffmann adds that the question typically has a practical background. "Recruiting processes can be lengthy, so employers ask about other applications to gauge a candidate's activity level and the risk of their unavailability in the near future," she explains in conversation with Capital. In short, the ultimate goal is to understand a candidate's progress in the job market and their level of interest in the company.
Embrace the candid dialogue
Schöffmann advises job seekers not to read too much into the question since it's often less invasive than it seems. A common misconception is that admitting to other applications raises doubts about your motivation. "That's complete nonsense," says Schöffmann. Instead, she suggests always saying, "Yes, I am in talks or have already had talks – even if I only have this one application running." This approach creates a sense of urgency and demonstrates your proactive approach to the job market.
Employers typically appreciate candidates who keep several options open. According to Schöffmann, it can even seem unbelievable if someone has only applied to one company. "It adds an interesting factor to your candidacy if you mention that you are already in talks," she explains. If you have already received one or more offers, don't hold back.
Keep in mind, specifics are not necessary. "It's never wise to provide exact numbers or even names of companies," cautions Klärchen. Instead, a better response might be, "Yes, I have applied to other companies, but I find the position at your company particularly appealing for reason X." Alternatively, you could say that you are striving to make an informed decision. "This comes across well," recommends Schöffmann.
Authenticity Wins Over Lies
here. And
Both coaches emphasize that dishonesty during a job interview can create unnecessary tension and drain energy. For example, claiming to have several offers when you haven't had any conversations is risky. "Most people find it unsettling when they have to lie," explains Schöffmann. "It's not a good foundation for a job interview, and it takes a lot of energy." Therefore, it's always better to stay as honest as possible.
