Heidelberg Hosts 'Innovating (trans)cultural Studies' Conference on Gift Exchange
An international conference titled 'Innovating (trans)cultural studies through gift exchange' is set to take place at the University of Heidelberg on July 16 and 17, 2025. Organized by Professor Dr. Veronika Čapská, a historian from Prague and a 4EU+ visiting professor, the event explores the dimensions and impacts of gift exchange across cultures.
The conference, supported by the 4EU+ European University Alliance, will delve into various aspects of gift exchange. These include political alliances, conflict resolution, philanthropy, and museology. It will also address intangible and ritual gifts, such as the transmission of craft secrets or the exchange of relics. The event aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration within the 4EU+ network.
Professor Čapská will focus on gift exchange in early modern Central Europe during her visiting professorship. The conference will also explore Marcel Mauss' approach to reciprocal gift exchange and its relevance to current research in the humanities and social sciences.
The conference is open to the academic public and interested students. It will take place in the Senate Hall of the Old University. Registration is open and can be done via [email protected]. The 4EU+ Alliance, which supports projects like the creation of a 3D model of the highest Alpine cliff, is expected to facilitate further interdisciplinary collaborations and innovations in cultural studies.
