High School Students in Fort Worth ISD Given Complimentary Access to Trinity Metro Public Transit Services

The Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) students are set to enjoy a groundbreaking public transportation program provided by Trinity Metro, the local transit authority in Tarrant County. This initiative offers free rides on buses, TEXRail, ZIPZONE on-demand rideshare services, and ACCESS paratransit for all passengers within Tarrant County, directly benefiting FWISD students by providing them with no-cost access to public transportation for school and extracurricular activities[1].

The objectives of this free transportation initiative include:

  • Enhancing accessibility and mobility for students throughout Fort Worth and the surrounding areas, facilitating easier and more affordable travel to and from school locations, and reducing attendance barriers.
  • Encouraging higher student participation in academic programs and extracurricular activities by removing transportation challenges.

While there is no direct data linking this program to academic success, greater access to transportation is widely recognized as a positive factor in improving student attendance and engagement in school activities[2].

Officials from both Trinity Metro and FWISD have expressed enthusiasm about the potential partnership. Anette Landeros, Trinity Metro's chief strategy officer, stated that the organization wants to remove transportation barriers for students[3]. The school board has given approval for superintendent Karen Molinar to negotiate a memorandum of understanding between the district and Trinity Metro for the program[4].

The proposed program is scheduled to run through July 31 of the next year[5]. It is worth noting that this program does not replace the district's yellow bus system that takes students to and from their campuses. Instead, it aims to cater to high-school students, providing them with access to extracurricular activities, outside tutoring, community resources, and job opportunities[6].

Trinity Metro operates 23 regular bus routes throughout Tarrant County, with its TEXRail system spanning from downtown Fort Worth to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, covering nine stations[7]. This extensive network ensures that students have a wide range of transportation options to choose from.

Officials hope to finalize the agreement before the first day of school, Aug. 12. In the meantime, students can utilize Trinity Metro's service if they miss their regular school bus[8]. This free transportation program is part of Trinity Metro’s county-wide free ridership initiative, designed to enhance accessibility and support academic and extracurricular involvement by eliminating transportation costs[3].
