187 New Police Officers Sworn In to Combat Rising Political Crime
In the face of an increasing trend of political crime, with extremists attempting to undermine democracy from both the left and right, 187 future police officers were sworn in on May 15th, 2023. The ceremony, presided over by Police President Dirk Fasse, marked a significant step towards strengthening the police force.
The new recruits, hailing from diverse backgrounds, include individuals from Schleswig-Holstein, Hesse, Bavaria, Hamburg, Turkey, Pakistan, the USA, Russia, Japan, Afghanistan, and Lebanon. This international mix reflects the growing internationalization of crime, with the police force also dealing with issues like child pornography and cybercrime.
The majority of the new officers will complete their training at the Hochschule der Polizei des Landes Brandenburg in Oranienburg over the next three years. The training programs will not only equip them with the necessary skills to deal with various types of crimes, from car damage and neighborhood disputes to cybercrime and large demonstrations, but also promote democratic resilience.
A large part of the new cohort comes from Lower Saxony and Bremen. The youngest candidate is just 18 years old, while the oldest is 40, demonstrating the age diversity within the force.
Dirk Fasse expressed respect for the candidates' decision to stand up for democracy, while Volker Ortgies, Director of the Local Police Authority in Bremerhaven, emphasized the role of the police as a model in society. The police force in Bremen and Bremerhaven aims to reach a target number of 3,100 employees in Bremen and 580 in Bremerhaven by 2027.
The police received a total of 1,073 applications, from which 61 women and 126 men were selected. The new officers were encouraged to bring democracy closer to the people and explain the role of the police, the rights of the individual, and the separation of powers to citizens.
Interior Senator Maürer stated that the strength of the police lies in good teamwork. A significant focus of the new officers' training will be on de-escalation strategies, ensuring that they are well-equipped to handle potentially volatile situations with care and professionalism.
