India's Emission Intensity Down 28% Ahead of COP26

India is making significant strides in its commitment to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable development. As world leaders prepare to gather in Glasgow for the 26th Conference of Parties (COP26), India reports a 28% reduction in emission intensity since 2005, nearing its 2030 target of 33-35%.

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has played a pivotal role in this progress. Since its inception, IGBC has facilitated over 6,780 green building projects, covering a vast 7.86 billion square feet. One of its earliest initiatives, the Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre (CII-Godrej GBC), established in 2004, aims to transform India into a global leader in green businesses by 2022.

India's commitment to renewable energy is evident in its increased installed power generation capacity from renewable sources, now at 38.5% against a target of 40% by 2030. This shift towards sustainability is reflected in its buildings and cities. The Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad, for instance, was awarded a Gold Green rating in 2020. More recently, GIFT City became India's first Greenfield Smart City to achieve the IGBC Green Cities Platinum rating in September 2021.

As India prepares to join over 190 leaders at COP26 to finalize climate action, its progress in emission reduction and green building initiatives is noteworthy. With a goal to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius, with a target of 1.5 degrees Celsius, India's commitment to sustainable development is clear. IGBC's aspiration to facilitate 10 billion square feet of green building footprint by 2022, and CII-Godrej GBC's goal to support India in achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, reflect the country's dedication to a greener future.
