The College of Arts and Sciences at Oberlin offers a unique opportunity for first-year students with the First-Year Seminar Program (FYSP). This program is designed to introduce students to the liberal arts learning experience.

The FYSP, led by Elizabeth Hamilton, who is not only the program director but also an Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences, Associate Professor of German, and Co-Chair of Musical Studies, offers more than 100 seminars on a rotating basis. These seminars, limited to 14-16 students each, encourage the sharing of new ideas, learning from others, and forming a close relationship with a professor in a small classroom setting.

Students can browse seminar offerings and course descriptions to select the one that best suits their interests. The program does not specify the number of seminars offered at any given time nor does it provide information about the frequency of seminar rotation.

The FYSP is aligned with the Peer Advising Leaders (PAL) Program and focuses on developing critical thinking, discussion, writing, and familiarizing students with learning resources. The program does not mention any prerequisites for enrollment.

Some examples of recent first-year seminars include those on the nature of human language, black women and liberation, science and ethics of genetic manipulation, the meanings of jazz across times and places, the genesis of controversy, and social justice in the United States.

Faculty across various departments and programs at Oberlin College offer these seminars on diverse subjects that stimulate intellectual curiosity and encourage questioning and understanding of science, society, and the community. However, the program does not provide information about the qualifications of the faculty teaching the seminars.
