In an unexpected turn of events, a Cessna 172 aircraft was hijacked from the Victoria Flying Club at Victoria International Airport (YYJ) and flown into the airspace above Vancouver International Airport (YVR) yesterday afternoon. The incident, which occurred around 1 p.m. local time, caused significant disruption, including a temporary ground stop for arriving flights and some diversions to nearby airports.

The hijacked plane circled overhead at YVR while air traffic controllers communicated with the situation, uncertain of the pilot's intentions. However, at approximately 1:45 p.m., the Cessna 172 landed safely at Vancouver International Airport, where Richmond RCMP officers arrested the sole occupant—the hijacker—without incident.

The response to the incident was swift and coordinated, involving multiple law enforcement teams such as the Richmond RCMP, Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service, Integrated Emergency Response Team, and RCMP Air Services. YVR’s Emergency Operation Center also played a crucial role in ensuring safety and security during the incident. By around 3 p.m., normal flight operations resumed at the airport.

The incident remains under investigation, and the Victoria Flying Club has confirmed that the aircraft belonged to them. At this time, no further details about the motives or circumstances of the hijacking have been publicly released.

Meanwhile, in other news, 75 former federal and state judges have called on the Senate Judiciary Committee to reject the nomination of Emil Bove, President Trump's former personal attorney, to an appeals-court judgeship.

In a lighter note, the US Postal Service has announced plans to sell four new forever stamps featuring SpongeBob SquarePants and the gang from Bikini Bottom. And an ad promoting tourism in Canada has gone viral for its compassion.
