Kick-off of entrepreneurial journey at the elementary school
In an endeavour to provide individual learning support for children from underprivileged educational backgrounds, Germany's Startchance education project has been launched. The project, which aligns with the principle that education opens doors and creates more equal opportunities for all children and young people, regardless of their socio-economic background, aims to improve educational opportunities for socially disadvantaged students.
The project, part of a broader effort to foster equal educational opportunities, specifically targets children who face social disadvantages, offering tailored support to help them succeed academically and personally. This initiative is designed to help these students overcome barriers, develop their talents, and enhance their prospects for social participation.
One of the schools benefiting from this initiative is Grundschule Auf den Heuen in Oslebshausen, Bremen. Senator Sascha Karolin Aulepp recently visited this school as part of the "Startchance Tour," observing small learning groups where students receive targeted support in acquiring basic German competencies, particularly in reading and writing.
The school is one of 43 schools in Bremen participating in the Startchance program. The program focuses on fostering basic competencies and strengthening school development. To facilitate this, multiprofessional teams are being set up to facilitate holistic student promotion and improve learning environments.
The school also benefits from a cooperation with the Duden Institute for Learning Therapy in Bremen. As part of the Startchance program, more math and German lessons are being conducted in small groups. Children like Joel (8), Annabell (10), and Caty (9) are among those who have been receiving additional reading and writing support from the Institute Director Andrea Mierig since the end of the fall break.
The children have reported finding the small group lessons fun and finding it easier to read texts and stories in class. Annabell, for instance, mentioned that she's now reading a thick "Harry Potter" book at home. School inspections will take place before Christmas to determine the needs of schools in terms of space and equipment, with the aim of setting up differentiation rooms and equipping school libraries and "learning islands."
The Startchance program is one of Germany's largest education projects, supported by a combined investment of 20 billion euros over ten years from federal and state governments. The project underscores Germany's commitment to providing equal educational opportunities and empowering young learners to participate fully in society.
Through the Startchance education project, personal growth and learning opportunities are emphasized for children from underprivileged backgrounds, aiming to improve their academic progress as well as their prospects for social participation. The project facilitates equal educational chances and fosters self-development by providing tailored support to socially disadvantaged students, augmenting their skills and talents to thrive in various aspects of life.
