Leander ISD Tightens Bus Safety After Rollover Injuries, Driver Cited

A school bus rollover in Leander ISD on Aug. 13, 2025, injured 11 students and the driver. The incident has led to changes in safety protocols and seatbelt enforcement on school buses.

The crash involved a 2024 Blue Bird school bus, equipped with lap/shoulder seatbelts as per state law. However, the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident to determine the cause.

Following the accident, Leander ISD has updated its seatbelt policy. From now on, school bus drivers will check that students are buckled up before departure. This new expectation will be included in the district's handbooks. The district has already equipped every school bus running daily routes with seatbelts, thanks to a 2023 bond voter approval.

Parents are now reminded to ensure their children buckle up every time they ride the bus. Meanwhile, the school bus driver involved in the crash, Tim Gall, is no longer employed by the district. He was cited for failure to drive in a single lane and improper use of a seatbelt.

Leander ISD is committed to improving school bus safety. By Jan. 1, 2027, the Texas Education Agency will calculate financial assistance needed for all school districts to equip their buses with lap/shoulder belts. Texas Senate Bill 546 requires districts to report seatbelt types by the end of the current school year.
