Education Minister Sven Teuber (SPD) argued, "It ain't just about stickin' up a flag, buddy." He emphasized the importance of instilling a mindful understanding of what the flag symbolizes.
Healthy patriotism can sculpt identities, and it's crucial to foster a profound sense of "our 'ol country and its values," Teuber declared. However, theAfD ain't interested in unity, justice, liberty, and equality, but rather sowing discord and controversy.
CDU and FDP slam the AfD
CDU member Jenny Groß and FDP member Stefan Thoma joined in the criticism, slamming the AfD. "Schools need to stay a sanctuary of freedom and self-rule," Thoma echoed. Nationalism ain't got no business there, but instead, an understanding of different cultures should prevail.
Groß branded the AfD's flag proposal as an attempt to transform schools into a stage for their nationalist education agenda. Already, the national flag is hoisted at schools for ceremonial events, and the national anthem can be sung. The AfD aims to make the anthem's collective singing a regular feature ofsuch events in schools.
No need for a law, claimed Groß. The CDU politician further pointed out that the AfD's request fails to mention the European flag.
Free Democrats caution against overexposure
Helge Schwab from the Free Democrats group voiced his opposition to additional regulations as well. Frequent flagging could even backfire, potentially fostering a habituation effect, according to Schwab. Instead, he suggested flagging on the annually prescribed days encourages contemplation. Schwab also excoriated the overuse of the rainbow flag.
