Scoring a Zero on Substance Abuse: Gautam Budh Nagar Takes a Tough Stand Against Drug Use Among Youth

In an unprecedented move, the Gautam Budh Nagar district administration has declared war on substance abuse among the youth, with schools and colleges expected to attest to the drug-free status of their campuses or face the consequences, officials revealed today.

According to sources, educational institutions that comply with this directive will be acknowledged and honored by the administration. These measures came to light following a discussion at a district-level meeting of the Narcotics Coordination Committee (NCORD), chaired by District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma.

During the meeting, representatives from the district excise department, police department, health authorities, education sector, and NGOs came together to take stock of the enforcement actions taken so far to combat the narcotics issue. The collective input was instrumental in suggesting strategies to intensify Gautam Budh Nagar's anti-drug campaign.

Drug addiction among the youth was pinpointed as one of the pressing issues of our time, with the District Magistrate urging the need for widespread awareness campaigns, implemented in collaboration with medical and engineering colleges, universities, residential welfare associations (RWAs), and voluntary organizations.

Additionally, the District Magistrate directed all concerned departments to undertake surprise inspections in hostels and PG accommodations to ensure their continued independence from any illicit substance-related activities. He also emphasized the importance of sensitizing students residing in these premises.

In line with its commitment to stopping drug abuse, the administration plans to join forces with medical and engineering colleges, universities, RWAs, and NGOs to conduct mass awareness campaigns. The police and excise departments are set to mount coordinated action to eliminate the sources of narcotic supply within the district.

To this end, the excise department has been ordered to circulate a toll-free number across all educational institutions, encouraging anonymous reporting of drug-related incidents. The identity of the informant will be kept confidential in all cases, the District Magistrate stressed.

On the enforcement front, the excise department intends to intensify its efforts and collaborate closely with educational institutions and other stakeholders to create a drug-free environment district-wide.

It's worth noting that the NCORD is a four-tier mechanism established by the central government to promote coordination between various entities involved in fighting drug trafficking and abuse. The district-level NCORD committees play a pivotal role in articulating anti-drug initiatives at the grassroots level.
