Meta Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over 2021 Data Breach
A class action lawsuit against Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is set to begin on October 10, 2025, at the Hamburg Higher Regional Court. Affected users have until October 31 to join the suit, which seeks compensation for a significant data breach in 2021 that exposed hundreds of millions of user records.
The data breach, which occurred in 2021, compromised sensitive user information including real names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, and relationship statuses. Users can check if their data was involved by using a claim check tool, which requires the phone number listed in their Facebook profile in 2018 and 2019.
The Federation of German Consumer Organizations (VZBV) is leading the lawsuit, with the support of the Hamburg Consumer Protection Center. The VZBV is tiering the compensation based on the data accessed, with a maximum of 600 euros per user. This ruling follows a 2024 decision by the Federal Court of Justice, which allowed German victims to claim damages even if no further harm had occurred.
As of October 1, 2025, over 14,000 people have already joined the class action lawsuit. Affected users can join for free and may be compensated for the data leak.
The oral hearing for the Meta data breach lawsuit is scheduled for October 10, 2025. Consumers have until October 31 to join the suit and may be eligible for compensation of up to 600 euros. The VZBV is leading the case, aiming to secure damages for the affected users.
