In today's NYT Connections game for March 15, 2025, I'll be spilling some hints for each category and providing the full solutions. Ward off the spoilers if you're yet to solve the puzzle!

Cracking the Categories

Here are some spoiler-free hints for the groupings in today's Connections:

  • Yellow: Sharp, pointy stuff that might hurt you
  • Green: Components of instruments serenading an orchestra
  • Blue: Words sprouting from courtroom drama
  • Purple: Verbiage to express desires in the mystical cosmos

Spoilers Ahead!

We're about to dish out some answering juice. Tread lightly if you don't wish to uncover the whole enchilada. (The full solution is further down.)

The Tricky Parts

None of the name-like words on the board are actual names.

SPINE refers to the stuff a porcupine bears, not a human backbone.

A STRING can be plucked with your fingers, and a PEG is the item the string fastens to.

Consider a prayer-like nursery rhyme associated with twilight to decode today's purple category.

The Color Coded Categories

  • Yellow: Sharp Protrusions
    • BARB, BRISTLE, NEEDLE, SPINE
  • Green: Stringed Instrument Parts
    • BRIDGE, NECK, PEG, STRING
  • Blue: Courtroom Manoeuvres
    • CHARGE, MOVE, SERVE, SUE
  • Purple: "Star Light, Star Bright"
    • MAY, MIGHT, TONIGHT, WISH

Double Warning: The Solution is Below

Ready to unearth the answers to today's Connections puzzle? Here they are:

The Yellow Words

The yellow grouping aka the simplest. The theme for today's yellow gathering is SHARP PROTRUSION and the words are: BARB, BRISTLE, NEEDLE, SPINE.

The Green Words

The second easiest green category with a theme of STRINGED INSTRUMENT PARTS: BRIDGE, NECK, PEG, STRING.

The Blue Words

The second most challenging blue group, featuring words used in litigation: CHARGE, MOVE, SERVE, SUE.

The Purple Words

The trickiest purple gathering with the theme from the nursery rhyme "Star Light, Star Bright": MAY, MIGHT, TONIGHT, WISH.

How I Cracked the Case

Lots of suspected names but they seemed fishy.

BARB could be Barbara, but it can also signify SPINE, NEEDLE, or BRISTLE.

MAY, MIGHT, and WISH can be desires or wishes.

That's when I realized STRING, NECK, BRIDGE, and PEG are likely parts of a guitar.

I saw MAY, MIGHT, WISH, and TONIGHT are all words from the rhyme, "star light, star bright."

That left me with SUE, SERVE, MOVE, and CHARGE. All verbs commonly used in legal proceedings.

How to Play Connections

Know the drill? Here's a recap:

Locate the Connections game on the New York Times website or their Games app. You'll see a 16-tiles gameboard, with one word or phrase on each. Find a group of four tiles with something in common. It could be categories like:

  • RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW (Types of wet weather)
  • BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH (Types of lists)

When you're confident about your guess, click Submit. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be shown.

Win when you've correctly identified all four groups, but try to avoid making 4 mistakes and losing the game.

Winning Strategies

Remember, groupings are crafted to be tricky. Look for overlapping groups. For example, BUCKET and GUEST could be painters, or EGG could be items coming in dozens.
