Passionate advocates at the Colorado vigil for Charlie Kirk reminisce about his fervent debates with university students during college campus events
Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was tragically assassinated at a college in Utah. His loss was deeply felt in Colorado, where he had made a significant impact on many young minds. A memorial event was held in his honour at Colorado State University's Canvas Stadium on September 18, 2025.
Several supporters and admirers of Kirk gathered at the memorial, including Bernice Strahl from Castle Rock, who expressed her disappointment at not being able to meet Kirk. Alexis Castillo and her friend Kora Gardner, young adults in college, traveled from Highlands Ranch to attend the vigil.
Isabel Brown, an advocate for Turning Point USA, spoke at the event and recalled her first encounter with Kirk when she was a student at Colorado State University. Brown appreciated Kirk for standing up for his Christian faith and sharing it with students. She underscored the devastating loss of Kirk to those who supported and loved him, stating that it still doesn't feel real.
David McCormack, a supporter from Greeley, emphasized the importance of open debate and information sharing, which Kirk was known for promoting. Castillo believed that Kirk's impact was in educating the youth, helping them to form their own political beliefs.
Security was tight at both the memorial and a previous event where Kirk was scheduled to debate college students. Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies assisted CSUPD, with drones, police dogs, horseback mounted patrol, and spotters visible on campus. An alternative organization hosted a counter event shortly after the Kirk vigil ended, promoting political debate without violence.
The event at Colorado State University was a poignant reminder of the impact Kirk had on his supporters and the broader community. Many generations of people attended the event, wearing either red 'Make America Great Again' hats or white hats with gold 47s and a gold TPUSA logo.
