Jagannath University Students Continue Hunger Strike Over Election Roadmap and Scholarship Demands

Students from Jagannath University's Management Department have been on a hunger strike since Tuesday, with no sign of breaking it yet. The students are demanding a change in the politics of the Students' Union and are pushing for a ban on the politics of irregular students.

The students have three main demands: clarification of the JnUCSU election roadmap, improved facilities at the central library, and air-conditioning. They have also demanded healthy food at subsidised rates in the cafeteria and specifications regarding the supplementary scholarship.

On the same day, leaders of JnU's Islami Chhatra Shibir unit met with the University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman, Professor SMA Faiz, regarding the JnUCSU policy and supplementary scholarship. The UGC chairman assured that the supplementary scholarship funds would be distributed among JnU students in November. However, the students have refused to accept the administration's statement, stating that it lacks clarity on who will receive the benefits, how many students will get it, or how much will be provided.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Rezaul Karim stated that they have accepted the students' demands in writing with clarity, and the JnUCSU election will be held on 27 November. The election process will begin on 8 October, with discussions to be held with student organisations, journalist associations, and other stakeholders to initiate the election process. The schedule for the election, including the preparation of the voter list, submission and scrutiny of nomination papers, and other activities, will be declared in phases.

Despite the Vice-Chancellor's statement, the students have refused to end the hunger strike. Shahin Mia, a protester, stated that the administration's statement is full of deception and that there is no specific decision regarding the cafeteria facilities. The students have also demanded specifications regarding when the supplementary scholarship will come into effect.

The JnUCSU election is scheduled to take place in November, with the election process set to begin on 8 October. The election process will conclude with voting and the announcement of results. The students will continue their hunger strike until their demands are met, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in the university's administration.
