Portugal Eases Citizenship Rules: Golden Visa Applicants No Longer Need CIPLE Test
The Portuguese government has announced changes to the requirements for obtaining Portuguese citizenship. Individuals applying for the Golden Visa are now exempt from taking the CIPLE test, a mandatory Portuguese language test previously required for citizenship. The CIPLE test, which costs €72, assesses applicants' proficiency in Portuguese at the A2 level.
The CIPLE test, or Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira, is an official Portuguese language proficiency exam organized by the University of Lisbon in collaboration with the Instituto Camões. It consists of three main parts: Reading & Writing, which accounts for 40% of the total score, Listening (30-35%), and Speaking (25-30%). Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 55% to pass the test.
The Instituto Camões, a public Portuguese institution dedicated to promoting the Portuguese language and culture worldwide, offers resources and support to help applicants prepare for the CIPLE test. These include Portuguese language courses, online resources, and official study materials. Applicants can also take advantage of the institute's cultural activities and social media platforms for language practice and tips.
The exemption from the CIPLE test for Golden Visa applicants is expected to simplify the citizenship process for these individuals. However, applicants for permanent residency or citizenship through other means, such as marriage to a Portuguese citizen or having a higher level Portuguese certificate, must still pass the CIPLE test. The Instituto Camões continues to play a crucial role in supporting language learners and promoting the Portuguese language and culture.
