PSU Secures $300K Grant to Boost Equity for Marginalized STEM Faculty

Portland State University (PSU) has secured a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation's ADVANCE Program. The funding will support a comprehensive study and strategic plan to improve the experiences and retention of marginalized STEM faculty, following concerning equity issues highlighted in a 2018 survey.

The grant will first facilitate a self-assessment of the current situation, followed by the implementation of a sustainable five-year strategic equity plan. The project aims to understand and enhance the workplace experiences of marginalized STEM faculty based on gender, race/ethnicity, and other intersectional identities. In-depth interviews with 33 STEM faculty will focus on the '5 P's': policies, practices, power structures, places, and people. The team will analyze and visualize interview data to identify themes and develop a wider survey.

The project has received backing from PSU administration and will be guided by internal and external advisory committees. The external board, meeting twice a year, offers expertise in intersectionality, diversity, inclusion, organizational change, STEM policies, and strategic planning. The team will combine qualitative, quantitative, and socio-spatial data to gain deeper insights into the equity landscape for diverse STEM faculty at PSU.

The $300,000 grant will enable PSU to study and address equity issues faced by marginalized STEM faculty. The ultimate goal is to create a sustainable five-year strategic equity plan, improving the experiences, retention, and career progression of these faculty members. The project's findings and strategies will contribute to a more inclusive and equitable STEM environment at PSU.
