Pupils Advocate for Revisiting 20-Minute School Drop-Off Zone Policy

Hellgate High School has kicked off the 2025-2026 academic year, and with it, a persistent parking issue. The current drop-off zone, located on a busy street, has been causing frustration among students due to the tickets issued for parking in the area.

The 20-minute parking enforcement in this zone hasn't been as strict in previous years, leading many students to be caught off guard by the sudden crackdown. By lunchtime on the first day of school, all students who had parked in the drop-off zone had received yellow ticket envelopes on their vehicles.

Ella Lambert, a senior at Hellgate, was one of those issued a warning ticket for parking in the drop-off zone. She, like many other students, is frustrated with the current parking situation. "The current drop-off zone on the packed streets is inadequate for parking," Lambert argues.

The school bus loading zone is used more frequently for student drop-offs than the current drop-off pickup designated zone, adding to the congestion. A proposed solution is to move the drop-off zone to the other side of the street, near the school bus loading zone.

If the drop-off zone is moved, the parking situation at Hellgate High School is likely to improve for rushed teenagers in the morning. Lambert also suggests a section for cars to park on the school premises as a potential solution.

Construction on Connell Street has prevented students from parking there, further exacerbating the parking issue. Unlike Big Sky and Sentinel schools, Hellgate High School does not have a designated lot for students to park in.

The sign at the front of the curb reads "pickup and drop off only- no parking," but students, in need of a place to park, have been using the area nonetheless. Implementing a dedicated drop-off zone for quick student drop-offs during morning traffic could improve parking availability at Hellgate High School.

The school staff, however, has a designated parking lot, leaving the on-street parking to the students. It remains to be seen whether the school administration will consider the students' concerns and make changes to the parking situation at Hellgate High School.
