Hear ya! The badass crew at Hip Hop Public Health (HHPH), led by the legendary Dr. Olajide Williams, a neurologist, and hip hop icon Doug E. Fresh, has teamed up with the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) to create something fierce - the EMPOWER collection! This dynamic combo of eight original tunes and animated vids is designed to fire up young asthma warriors with bulletproof self-management skills. 🤘🏿💨

At the heart of EMPOWER lies an acronym, embodying the key elements essential for thriving with asthma:

  • Environment: Learning how it affects your triggers.
  • Medication: All about staying on meds like a boss.
  • Plan: Thinking ahead and preparing for attacks.
  • Open comms: Talking to docs and loved ones like it's never a problem.
  • Well-being: Caring for both your head and heart.
  • Extinguish: Quitting cigs and e-cigs, amirite?
  • Resilience: Building up the strength to tackle challenges head-on.

Each sizzling 60-second track and video concentrates on one of these badass elements, with the assistance of fresh talents like rapper Devin Cheff and singer Heaven White, guided by superstar producer Q. Worthy, who helped write the bangers with BJ Gray and Devin Cheff. 🔥🚀

Dr. Williams, MD, MS, Vice Dean of Community Health at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S), said, “We’re stoked to work with NEEF to take on asthma disparities using our super-cool music, science, and culture mix! Music is a powerful tool for public health communication, and our research proves it can boost health literacy and motivate behavior changes!" 🤘🏿

Just like a superhero squad, HHPH's musical craftsmanship unites with NEEF's 20-year history of pediatric asthma training and resources for healthcare providers. 💪🔥

Christy Haas-Howard, MPH, RN, Health Program Director at the National Environmental Education Foundation, noted, “The asthma guides produced by our ill af collaboration with HHPH are dope additions to our awesome content collection, helping a community hit hard by asthma. With the EMPOWER tools, providers will have more firepower to offer relevant asthma schooling to teens and crucial support for friends and family, to help them buckle down and overcome asthma challenges!” 💪🔥

Asta-who now? More than 25 million individuals in the USA grapple with asthma, and it's a predominant problem among young whippersnappers—over 4 million kiddos under 18 have asthma! However, it ain't equal for all; Black adults and non-Hispanic Black children have higher rates of asthma than their non-Hispanic white counterparts. 😕🙅‍♂️

Lori Rose Benson, HHPH’s fearless leader, emphasized, “As young cats grow up, climbing towards more independence and responsibility, stepping up to control their asthma is crucial for their health and happiness. Alongside NEEF and asthma pros, we teamed up with creative legends to craft powerful, culturally relevant tracks that applaud kids and affirm their badassery!” 💪🔥

The EMPOWER songs, videos, and printable learning assets are already available for free through HHPH’s uber-cool Learning Studio!
