Rapid Increase in Student Population in Schools of New Almaty

School No. 61 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, has made a significant shift towards online learning, with the majority of its ninth-grade students opting to continue their education from home. According to Gulmira Myrzakhmetova, the director of the school, this move could be a response to the challenges posed by the current circumstances.

The online learning format offered by the locally developed educational platform, "Sphere," seems to cater to students who feel more comfortable learning in their own homes. The use of "Sphere" for lessons includes video conferences and an interactive whiteboard for drawing and writing, providing a seamless transition from traditional classroom learning.

Gulmira Myrzakhmetova also stated that teachers are focusing more on engaging students in distance learning, which could potentially improve the quality of education. This focus on engagement might be a strategy to address the shortage of student places in Almaty's schools, given the significant impact of demographic and migration processes on the number of student places.

The city administration of Almaty has announced active construction measures to build new schools in the Turksib District to address the shortage of student places. In the Turksib district alone, the shortage reaches around 1,700 places. To alleviate this issue, a large annex with a capacity of 450 places was added to School No. 601 this year, and a new educational institution with a capacity of 600 was opened in the Nurzhan microdistrict.

The educational online platform "Sphere" allows students to participate in lessons without feeling shy, as they are at home. This aspect, combined with its effectiveness in organising the learning process, has made it a popular choice among students.

School No. 61 currently has over 900 students enrolled. With only 25 opting for traditional learning, the number of students preferring online learning is significant. SIM cards have been distributed in the first and second quarters in Almaty, and will be fully distributed to interested parents by the third quarter, further facilitating online learning.

It's worth noting that "Sphere" is on par with its foreign counterparts, having been developed by local programmers. Gulmira Zhomartbayeva, head of the education department of the Turksib district, stated that the city has full provision of computer equipment, including the Turksib district.

The quality of education might be improving due to the focus on engagement in distance learning, as suggested by Gulmira Myrzakhmetova. This shift towards online learning could be a promising step towards addressing the challenges faced by Almaty's schools in the face of demographic and migration processes.
