Sailing vessel "Gorch Fock" commences education program
The German Navy's sailing training ship, Gorch Fock, set sail from its home port, Kiel, on August 9, 2025, marking the beginning of a significant late summer voyage. This journey, which will take the vessel through the Kiel Fjord and across the Baltic Sea and North Sea, is bound for Edinburgh, Scotland.
The Gorch Fock is a renowned sailing training ship of the German Navy, and this voyage is primarily aimed at training officer cadets and attracting new talent, as stated by the Navy. Along the way, the ship will likely provide opportunities for navigation and seamanship training under various sea conditions.
During the Kiel to Bremerhaven leg of the journey, the Bundeswehr Discovery Days are taking place, with 30 young people on board as part of the event. In Amsterdam, 60 young people will join the Gorch Fock as part of the "Meer. Gorch Fock. Erleben" project.
The Gorch Fock is expected to return to its berth in Kiel on September 16th. Along the way, the ship will participate in several events, including the local "Sail" event in Amsterdam, which coincides with the city's 750th anniversary, and "Sail 2025" in Bremerhaven. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is scheduled to visit the Gorch Fock during its participation in "Sail 2025" in Bremerhaven.
In Edinburgh, 75 officer cadets of the Military Service will board the Gorch Fock. The Navy will also participate in the "Day of Monuments" in Flensburg, with an "Open Ship" at the Naval Academy Mürwik and on the Gorch Fock.
The voyage of the Gorch Fock is taking place under clear skies and a gentle breeze. This training voyage, with a special mission and a stop in Bremerhaven, will continue alongside units from the 2nd Fleet.
